I’ve never read the Declaration of Independence in English nor paid any serious attention. But it seems very interesting text: very modern, ambitious and inspiring but contradictory, considering some deeds of the US in recent history. It is funny that they were listing what they did not like about the King: I am sure the Tea party is imitating the style of this text. I am not sure if the words were modified but the text of more than 200 years old is totally readable by people in the 21st century. The same is not true for any Japanese texts written in 1700s. In this sense, Japan may still be a developing country when it comes to democracy. This document is totally unimaginable for the Japanese of that time.
