Just random thought. I had an interview with a Canadian university prof who was working on atmospheric science in general and he suggested that I could work with the Nozomi project. That was quite exciting, but I ended up with working with another prof who just took my application and directly went to the chair and the secretary with it and just proceeded to finish my acceptance. After I was already working at the university, the Nozomi prof send me email asking about my application since he was wondering about it. That was very nice of him. He actually did not even received my application form though I put him as the first choice. Later he got the biggest single funding in the university. But Nozomi as we know now failed. So if I worked with him, then I would have wasted my 1-3 years for the failed mission. I wonder how many people in science had this problem for their PhD: collapsing of their project.
